Give Me A Dub Plate - Freestylers

Friday, December 30, 2011

Time 10:00pm until 7:00am

After a fifteen-year career which has seen the Freestylers cover all bases from the biggest festivals and most talked about nightclubs around the world, global dance charts and even the legendary UK music show Top Of The Pops, they have achieved the kind of success most artists can only dream of. And now, with attention firmly turned to the studio, it’s fair to say Matt Cantor and Aston Harvey are set for a veritable assault on the music scene in 2011.

After discovering a mutual love of hip-hop and electro, Matt and Aston started making tracks together in the mid ‘90’s and have honed their craft across countless genres since. Currently focusing on everything from breaks to ragga and dubstep, their ever-eclectic style rings true with each track unleashed from their palms.

Since last year’s release of ‘Cracks’, which has soared past 3 million hits on YouTube, fans and media have been waiting with baited breath for their next move. Upcoming EP ‘Frozen’ looks set to cause big waves when it hits stores in the coming weeks, and with countless hours of studio time booked in, keep those eyes peeled for their new artist album due to touch down at the later end of the year…

Releases aside, the Freestylers 2011 gig diary is filling up at speed, with only the coolest festivals and venues on their hit list. Anyone who’s experienced a Freestylers set will know what we mean when we say, you will be rocked hard, and those that haven’t… what are you waiting for??

If you are into breaks then this party is for you!

There have been those select few special DJ`s who always bring the people together and Andy Riley is one of those. Andy has been coming to NZ shores for several years now and never disappoints with his mighty 4 hour sets.

Main room with Andy Riley, Ed, Andy Vann & Dean Davis

Room Two, Benwah, Nats, Jamie White & Tom McGuiness, Reed & Radley, Murry Sweetpants, Rob Warner, Paul Orion

DJ, Producer, Label owner Andy Riley has certainly been busy over the last 20 years. His productions as one half of Inland Knights, as well as various solo outings under his Toka Project guise, have ensured that he has remained a prominent fixture both from behind the decks and on wax.

After a few years serving his apprenticeship as an in-demand local DJ in and around Nottinghamshire UK, Andy’s inevitable step into production started in earnest with fellow DJ Steve Walker.

The Turnaround w/Grooveman Spot aka DJ Kou-G (JP)

Photo slideshow for mobile browsers

It's been just over 2 years since The Turnaround hosted Grooveman Spot for his first New Zealand appearance. Word on the street was that in the 9 years that The Turnaround has been running, our faithful regulars declared him their favourite international guest to date. A big call, considering some of the players that have graced the decks over the years at one of Auckland's best dances.

With this in mind, Grooveman Spot hits Aotearoa for round two, on a rare international sojourn representing influential Tokyo record store/label/movement 'Jazzy Sport'.

Bringing with him his eclectic Far Eastern blend of deep sound system wares, from hip-hop to soul and futuristic beat science, this is a one off international club event not to be missed.

- Kicks off 11pm till late

Booyah! 1 Step Forward 2 Steps Back @ Coherent

November 25, 2011 at 10:00am until Yesterday at 5:00am

Fundamental Proudly Presents.. Booyah!

A night celebrating Jungle music in all its iterations. From Reggae and the original Jungle Sound, through its evolution into Drum & Bass, Garage and more recently Jungle influenced sounds including Dubstep, J.Tek, 3beat, Juke etc. This is the first installment of an on going series that will showcase the country’s wide range of Jungle minded talent.

On these nights the roots of Jungle will always be represented by strictly vinyl sets. We see this as fundamental. Aiming to deliver not just the anthems but also rare dubplates in their original glory. The future of the sound will be equally represented with DJ sets showcasing the latest aspects of the Jungle movement including the hottest digi-dub selections on offer.

So round up the whistle posse, get yourself an air-horn and dust off that itchy lighter finger!

Selectors:

Dubhead (Strictly 45 Reggae)

Selecting the sounds since 1983, Dubhead is one of Aotearoa's authorities on Reggae and Dub. Bringing a heavyweight selection on original 7" vinyl, this key set will showcase the roots of not just Jungle but DJ culture in general.

48 Sonic (93-95 Harcore Jungle)

A true veteran of the New Zealand Jungle scene 48 is no stranger to Hardcore, Jungle and Drum & Bass. Having never sold a plate in his 25 years of collecting records he is the prime candidate to represent the early years of Jungle. Push up your lighter!

Wizard (Oldskool Drum & Bass)

Originally hailing from the Jungle epicenter Christchurch Wizard has been mixing Jungle and Drum & Bass since day dot. Don't miss this rare opportunity to witness a true don rolling out his pick of old skool D&B classics.

Flex (Jump Up Jungle & D&B)

Having held the Rumble In The Jungle and Dubclash titles Flex holds a wide appreciation for breakneck riddims. Playing and Promoting Jungle since 97 he has teamed up with fellow Junglist Insomniac to bring you Booyah!, a follow up to the highly successful Run It Red at Fu (RIP).

Lowquid b2b Fakawi (Legit Dubstep)

Biological and musical brothers hold tight for a set of rib rattling proportions from these two badmen. With gems dug deep from the crates you will experience true dubstep in its original form. We are talking bass heavy goodness not that screechy 'fighting robots' noize.

Insomniac (Future Bass)

Having recently moved on from his role as program director at Quake City's RDU Insomniacs job is to know where music is heading. Expect the most upfront in bass heavy Jungle informed sounds from this top selector.

Host:

Rugged Tekniques

Originally from England Tek was quickly adopted by the Wellington Drum & Bass scene and MCed events for the full spectrum of headliners and promoters. Now based in Auckland he is heralded as New Zealand's premier Grime MC and wields the versatility to rip over almost any bass heavy style.

Live aerosol art demonstration by Jdubs (Wall Spice)
