Give Me A Dub Plate - Freestylers

Friday, December 30, 2011

Time 10:00pm until 7:00am

After a fifteen-year career which has seen the Freestylers cover all bases from the biggest festivals and most talked about nightclubs around the world, global dance charts and even the legendary UK music show Top Of The Pops, they have achieved the kind of success most artists can only dream of. And now, with attention firmly turned to the studio, it’s fair to say Matt Cantor and Aston Harvey are set for a veritable assault on the music scene in 2011.

After discovering a mutual love of hip-hop and electro, Matt and Aston started making tracks together in the mid ‘90’s and have honed their craft across countless genres since. Currently focusing on everything from breaks to ragga and dubstep, their ever-eclectic style rings true with each track unleashed from their palms.

Since last year’s release of ‘Cracks’, which has soared past 3 million hits on YouTube, fans and media have been waiting with baited breath for their next move. Upcoming EP ‘Frozen’ looks set to cause big waves when it hits stores in the coming weeks, and with countless hours of studio time booked in, keep those eyes peeled for their new artist album due to touch down at the later end of the year…

Releases aside, the Freestylers 2011 gig diary is filling up at speed, with only the coolest festivals and venues on their hit list. Anyone who’s experienced a Freestylers set will know what we mean when we say, you will be rocked hard, and those that haven’t… what are you waiting for??

If you are into breaks then this party is for you!

Houseware & Fine Tuned present...BEAT BOUTIQUE returns for yet another special occasion. ANDY RILEY (Inland knights, Toka, Drop, Borrowed) returns and yes it will be another beauty of a party. There have been those select few special DJ`s who always bring the people together and Andy Riley is one of those. Andy has been coming to NZ shores for several years now and never disappoints with his mighty 4 hour sets.

Main room with Andy Riley, Ed, Andy Vann & Dean Davis

Room Two, Benwah, Nats, Jamie White & Tom McGuiness, Reed & Radley, Murry Sweetpants, Rob Warner, Paul Orion

DJ, Producer, Label owner Andy Riley has certainly been busy over the last 20 years. His productions as one half of Inland Knights, as well as various solo outings under his Toka Project guise, have ensured that he has remained a prominent fixture both from behind the decks and on wax.

After a few years serving his apprenticeship as an in-demand local DJ in and around Nottinghamshire UK, Andy’s inevitable step into production started in earnest with fellow DJ Steve Walker.

The Turnaround w/Grooveman Spot aka DJ Kou-G (JP)

Photo slideshow for mobile browsers

It's been just over 2 years since The Turnaround hosted Grooveman Spot for his first New Zealand appearance. Word on the street was that in the 9 years that The Turnaround has been running, our faithful regulars declared him their favourite international guest to date. A big call, considering some of the players that have graced the decks over the years at one of Auckland's best dances.

With this in mind, Grooveman Spot hits Aotearoa for round two, on a rare international sojourn representing influential Tokyo record store/label/movement 'Jazzy Sport'.

Bringing with him his eclectic Far Eastern blend of deep sound system wares, from hip-hop to soul and futuristic beat science, this is a one off international club event not to be missed.

Booyah! 1 Step Forward 2 Steps Back @ Coherent

Photo slideshow for mobile browsers

November 25, 2011 at 10:00am until Yesterday at 5:00am

Fundamental Proudly Presents.. Booyah!

A night celebrating Jungle music in all its iterations. From Reggae and the original Jungle Sound, through its evolution into Drum & Bass, Garage and more recently Jungle influenced sounds including Dubstep, J.Tek, 3beat, Juke etc. This is the first installment of an on going series that will showcase the country’s wide range of Jungle minded talent.

On these nights the roots of Jungle will always be represented by strictly vinyl sets. We see this as fundamental. Aiming to deliver not just the anthems but also rare dubplates in their original glory. The future of the sound will be equally represented with DJ sets showcasing the latest aspects of the Jungle movement including the hottest digi-dub selections on offer.

So round up the whistle posse, get yourself an air-horn and dust off that itchy lighter finger!

Selectors:

Dubhead (Strictly 45 Reggae)

Selecting the sounds since 1983, Dubhead is one of Aotearoa's authorities on Reggae and Dub. Bringing a heavyweight selection on original 7" vinyl, this key set will showcase the roots of not just Jungle but DJ culture in general.

48 Sonic (93-95 Harcore Jungle)

A true veteran of the New Zealand Jungle scene 48 is no stranger to Hardcore, Jungle and Drum & Bass. Having never sold a plate in his 25 years of collecting records he is the prime candidate to represent the early years of Jungle. Push up your lighter!

Wizard (Oldskool Drum & Bass)

Originally hailing from the Jungle epicenter Christchurch Wizard has been mixing Jungle and Drum & Bass since day dot. Don't miss this rare opportunity to witness a true don rolling out his pick of old skool D&B classics.

Flex (Jump Up Jungle & D&B)

Having held the Rumble In The Jungle and Dubclash titles Flex holds a wide appreciation for breakneck riddims. Playing and Promoting Jungle since 97 he has teamed up with fellow Junglist Insomniac to bring you Booyah!, a follow up to the highly successful Run It Red at Fu (RIP).

Lowquid b2b Fakawi (Legit Dubstep)

Biological and musical brothers hold tight for a set of rib rattling proportions from these two badmen. With gems dug deep from the crates you will experience true dubstep in its original form. We are talking bass heavy goodness not that screechy 'fighting robots' noize.

Insomniac (Future Bass)

Having recently moved on from his role as program director at Quake City's RDU Insomniacs job is to know where music is heading. Expect the most upfront in bass heavy Jungle informed sounds from this top selector.

Host:

Rugged Tekniques

Originally from England Tek was quickly adopted by the Wellington Drum & Bass scene and MCed events for the full spectrum of headliners and promoters. Now based in Auckland he is heralded as New Zealand's premier Grime MC and wields the versatility to rip over almost any bass heavy style.

Live aerosol art demonstration by Jdubs (Wall Spice)

Between them they have the experience of supporting the likes of Public Enemy, Dizzee Rascal, Salt N Pepa, Wu-Tang Clan, Diplo, Kelis, Lady Gaga, The Presets, Yolanda Be Cool, Rye Rye, South Rakkas Crew, Tha Alkaholiks, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Lucky Dube and many more as well as gracing the stages of countless festivals including Good Vibes, BDO, Groovin’ The Moo, Splendour, Parklife, Falls, We Love Sounds and Laneway Festival.

As an MC, Kween G’s focus is potent content and flawless delivery and style. Kween G makes music that excites, entertains, and enlightens her listeners, but most of all she makes music to “move ya behind to”. DJ Revolution (USA) Live @ Arcade Video!

Photos from the evening can be seen at http://bit.ly/pmsaNm

Saturday, September 17 · 6:00pm - 8:00pm

At age 12, DJ Revolution began DJing on a makeshift mixer and belt drive turntables assembled by his grandfather.

11 years later, he moved to LA to pursue his dreams as a hip hop DJ.

On a chance invite to play a small set on the legendary Wake Up Show, Revolution walked in to the midst of hip hop royalty. Amongst the crowd in attendance were the show's hosts - Sway and King Tech, as well as Rob Swift from the X-Men and Q-Bert's entire Skratch Piklz crew.

Jumping on the airwaves with a mixer he had never seen before, Revolution delivered an amazing showcase and sealed his pass to the hip hop hall of fame.

Invited on to the Wake Up Show as full time DJ, Revolution has manned the most prolific hip hop show in the world for the last 10 years, and participated in some of hip hop's most important moments.

He is signed to NYC's Duck Down Records.

This Saturday night Arcade invites you to share in the legendary moment some 10-odd years ago, when Revolution rocked the turntables in a legendary showcase.

Watch Revolution take to the decks before his Saturday night gig and witness one of the most skilled turntablists in the world today.

Goldie created his debut album, the immaculate ‘Timeless’ on his Metalheadz imprint, in 1995. 16 years later, the sentiment rings true: it sounds remarkably more progressive and idiosyncratic than ever. ‘Timeless’ as a concept defines who Goldie is, in every sense of the word. Decades from now, his music, art, charismatic gold smile (remnants of his teenage days as an alchemist, selling gold teeth in New York) and larger-than-life aura will still intrigue and confound even the most jaded of historians.

There are many faces to the complex creative, far beyond his musical accomplishments as an iconic and ever-evolving producer, being largely responsible for Drum & Bass’ most stirring, experimental and symphonic work. Or as an uncompromising DJ that’s lit up bassbins in just about every city across the globe, for well over two decades. Or as bold leader of the iconic Metalheadz label, harnessing an international roster of groundbreaking artists. The endless list of his non-music titles are equally wide-ranging as they are surprising: historical graffiti artist (covering his estate with over 60 murals by the age of 17); acclaimed fine artist; author; orchestral conductor; part-time Hollywood actor; gossip column mainstay; ‘Eastenders’ character; reality TV and documentary star; father; yoga enthusiast (“This past year, I’ve done 87 classes in the UK - 20 in America and about 25 in Asia - so I’m up in the hundreds, baby.”). Perhaps his atypical background exemplifies the strength and infinite possibility of a person’s creative spirit.

"This music - this wildstyle music - is not for the faint-hearted. I tried to get the alchemy right, which I've done on this mix: each of these are standalone tunes. It is dynamic, it does take you from one extreme to the other, because for me that's what my life is like. It'll be bikram yoga one morning, then DJing long into the night. Everything is balanced, not too much of one thing. When I think of the D&B tunes on this mix, I think of them as spiritual euphoria, like I've been lifted out of something."
Goldie

As Metalheadz strongly rides into its 18th year, the label and its leader keep the focus on progression and future-geared ideals, without ever succumbing to the incessant whirrs of today’s hype machine. As the various offshoots of bass music morph around them, MDZ continue to explore and expand the confines of drum & bass with their global army. ‘FABRICLIVE 58: Goldie’ is an embodiment of the Metalheadz mantra: forever finding ways to challenge formulas and take the D&B sound into an intelligent, deeply spiritual - and downright primal - sphere. A loud and proud snapshot of his Metalheadz stable, and the likeminded artists that stay at their level on equally progressive D&B labels, the mix features some of the most cutting edge and visionary music on the genre’s helm. ‘FABRICLIVE 58’ stands as proof that their stance within the music world is, quite simply, unmovable - not today nor in the world of tomorrow. Time stands no chance.

Liberty (Dan Alm & Jeremy Grasso) is a newly formed duo from Los Angeles (USA) that has quickly taken the electro scene by force with their heavy, melodic, and glitchy sound. The musical diversity they demonstrate is what sets them apart from the others. From classical string build ups, to 80s key guitar solos, to hard style synths breakdowns, Liberty does it all. The recent success of the duo has gained astonishing momentum. With their original track, "ThunderFist" charting into Beatport's top 10, as well as other Beatport releases breaking into the top 100; Liberty has proven to be unstoppable! They have become an online sensation, gaining tens of thousands of plays, thousands of downloads of their free give aways, and blogs all across the web have been spreading the word about them. Liberty has a fan base growing around the world and no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

CLOCKED promotions and FuZen are proud to present….

SAMIYAM (LA) (Brainfeeder/Hyperdub/Poo-Bah)

Yes only a month or so after the release of his sophomore album “Sam Baker’s Album", we’ve got him here direct from LA LIVE…

For the uninformed, Samiyam is an instrumental hip hop producer that has made huge waves worldwide with his unique sound. He has been pivotal in popularizing the particular soundscape also famously dominated by the likes of Clams Casino, Gas Lamp Killer, Nosaj Thing and Flying Lotus (who Sam also produces with, as FLYamSAM).

His last visit here saw him play live off MPC's/Samplers to a full capacity show at Cassette, wowing everyone in attendance. His energetic set consisted of old school hip hop, heavier dubby beats, glitchy synth heavy rhythms and funk/soul/RnB elements. He also brought with him a whole swag of unreleased collabs/remixes/mash ups featuring the likes of Fly Lo, DJ Premier, Big Noyd, Blu, Jay-Z, Alchemist, Radiohead, Exile, Lil Wayne, Shlohmo and more.

Local support from SCRATCH 22, BEN JAMIN (live), FINDERS KEEPER, JOHNNY SABLE, MOPPY & MAD WORLD.

This is one of your last chances to embrace the quality hip hop/atmosphere Zen provides since it’s closing- SO BE THERE. Also as it’s midweek, Samiyam will be on ~12:30, so there’s no excuse for 9-5er’s to miss this. For those wanting to make a night of it (as you should be!) there’s an after party at Third & Social with the amazing LOWQUID headlining.

Last Thursday @ Cassette Nine

Cassette’s a homely place with a split personality. By night its a throbbing night club and music venue hosting an array of weekly club nights and one off events and by day and early evening is a relaxed cocktail bar and restaurant with authentic Italian menu.

Audio's first experience with electronic music was in the Early 90's with the Colin Dale and Colin Favour radio shows on Kiss 100. He was instantly hooked, and when, a few years later, the classic "Wormhole" LP on Virus recordings was released, there was no turning back and he embraced the underground family that we know and love as, Drum and Bass. Inspired to start DJing, non-stop record buying a...nd mixing followed, and he was soon playing at local illegal raves around London. Production was the next logical step for him, experimenting with various pieces of hardware over the next few years. After a chance meeting, Audio was handed a CD with the programs Acid 1.0 and Reason 1.0, and from that moment things dramatically changed. soon after he began releasing tracks and getting a buzz around him, From this Audio became the main producer behind Resonant Evil and went on to have releases on Renegade Hardware, G2 , Outbreak and Moving Shadow, this also lead to many opportunities DJing across Europe. Moving to present day,Audio has joined Dylan's fiendish family and has become a member of the Freak / Anger Management & Therapy Sessions cult and has been concentrating purely on his solo material, bringing His own special brand of twisted tetchy darkness that has been consistently demolishing dance floors all over the UK and Europe! With some of the most highly anticipated releases scheduled for Freak Recordings, released now is the monster 12"Freak 021 "Warehouse"/"Destroyed" one of the biggest singles of the year, forthcoming is his debut EP " Designed For War" (Freak026ep) he recently just released a track on Subtitles "Missing"a remix of Tech Itch & Jakes "Retribution", and a remix of BSE's "The Cooler" Recently he collaborated on a killer with Dylan, more info on that coming soon..big things! Audio is currently dj'ing all over Europe and is a resident at the infamous "Therapy Sessions" parties worldwide, it is hopeless to resist this Bad Seed!

ALEX SMOKE Live

“From big room to intimate, deep to jacking with occasional future bass accents, dubstep-leaning respites, 80's synths and industrially-edged moments, Alex Smoke's sets are more advanced than radical. Smoke easily engages the crowd with a tangible sense of musical purpose, fist punching the air and tick-tock percussion provides rhythmic relief before heads drop as the bass rolls again”

Glitch the System:

Glitch the System is a new night dedicated to bringing you the freshest Glitch Hop from around the globe. For those unfamiliar with this term it is the name given to an new and emerging style of club bass music that infuses Hip Hop with fresh new production techniques drawing from Dubstep and DnB, but also bringing It's own unique brand of funk and cleverness. It has the attitude and swagger of Hip Hop as well as incorporating other styles such as Reggae and Rock with the face melting bass drops of DnB and Dubstep. As Hip Hop has no specific tempo neither does Glitch Hop and that allows the music to move around in ways that no other club music can, and when played by a skilled Dj ( turntabalist ) it makes for a killer club night, a night not to be missed!

Opiuo:

A scrumptious, glitch laden, bass dolloping, luscious soundscape brooding world sounds like fun right? Well this is precisely the musical world created by electronic producer and performer Opiuo.

Originally from a small town deep in the New Zealand countryside, Opiuo now resides in the pimp hustle back streets of Melbourne Australia, where he has gone about building an international reputation for his extremely original, party fuelling creations. Playing live at major festivals, headlining club nights, and touring extensively in front of sold out crowds all across the USA, Canada, and Australasia.

Favouring fun n funk fuelled body shaking sonic manipulations, the Opiuo sound is being included in DJ sets from some of the worlds most respected, from Z-Trip to Bassnectar, KraftyKuts to Tipper and everyone in between. His music has featured in films, documentaries, television series, and high profile radio stations throughout the globe. 2010 even saw him selected to open for MC Hammer at a private Google party. Quite literally rocking ear holes in every corner of the globe.

His music has dominated digital download charts, with his debut full length release "Slurp And Giggle" being nominated for Best Dance / Electronic Release at the Australian Independent Music Awards, reaching number 10 on iTunes, and was the most downloaded album for 2010 on addictech.com. His releases as singles have spent time at #1 on beatport.com for Breaks, Electronica, Dubstep, and even Chillout.

2011 sees Opiuo touring the world once again, releasing his brand of sonic manipulations to a hugely positive response, and there's no sign of his slowing down anytime soon…

Wednesday, July 13 at 10:00pm - July 14 at 8:00am

The Third And Social
3 Galway St, Britomart
Auckland, New Zealand

First of all we’ve got IMAGE & MIKS. Mysterious new hip hop duo made up of some old heads (including Mr Mohi Owens) taking a fresh approach, with jazzy boom bap beats and underground lyrics. Still need more proof they’re stooped good? Check this- http://soundcloud.com/mikselect/07-from-the-poet/

Next up we’ve got what I suppose you would call a supergroup? One half is Dylan Cherry, Tabac resident and member of the Rekkit party promotion duo The Queens Street Holligans. The other half is one Miles Loveless, better known as potentially one of NZ’s greatest musical experts of recent times- Pikachunes. Together, their powers combine to form KANED & ABLE.

Next up holding down the back bar on a classic/instrumental hip hop tip is one third of All Black Everything, SHEAHAN HURI, pulling a solo real name no gimmicks DJ set for a change.

Also featuring in a Nark debut is Jason Gundry, AKA FUNKNDIRTY, keeping it funky and, well, dirty, on a hip hop tip. Party hip hop and funky shit to keep you keeping on until buses commence on Thursday and are able to take you the fuck home.

So stack ‘em up with ya residents and you have:

Nick Thayer & SevenMilligram (AU) @ Coherent!

Kelly Watch The Stars (Nick Thayer Bootleg) - Air // FREE DOWNLOAD

One of Ink + Coherent's favourite DJ's Nick Thayer is coming to our shores again to no doubt bring us another banging set along with his bro SevenMilligram who will be putting on an AV set to coincide with his set.

There is no-one else who can drop a set like Nick Thayer. Every single track is his exclusive. An original. A remix. A re-edit. A bootleg. A mash-up. Equal parts hip hop, club, rave, house, drum and bass. No-one can put it together like Thayer either. Perhaps it is the throwback rock moves, the seat-of your-pants approach. Feeling kinda like a freight train on the edge of control. Some jams you will definitely know, some you might know, some you definitely won't. All will make you move

In the studio Nick is one of the most widely recognised and respected names across a multitude of genres. Massive tracks like Ca$h Money, Reach For The Lazers, Mind Control (as found on PS2 game 'Motor Storm'), and the MOP approved Ante Up remix have all blasted through sound systems like dy-no-miiiite. Sway, DJ Yoda, Wizard Sleeve, AC Slater, Sporty O, Trevor Loveys, A Skillz, and Black Noise are part of the long list of people Nick has worked with in the past year alone. With releases on Southern Fried (Fatboyslim's label), Passenger, Sweat It Out, Klub Kids, Insane Bangers, Bombstrikes, and many more, you'll find everyone from Kissy Sell Out to Freestylers to Cuban Brothers to Utah Saints rocking his tunes week in week out in the clubs.

May 2010 sees the long awaited release of Nick Thayer's album 'Just Let It Go' through Passenger. Musically it forms an amalgamation of sonic sound clashes. Alongside this Nick has been working with visual artist sevenmilligram creating a DJ/AV show. As with all of Nick's endeavours this is aimed squarely at the club. The focus is on making you jump, using the visuals to connect in another medium.

There ain't no party like a Nick Thayer party. Put your rave shoes on and get ready to dance.

Alive - Jupiter Project

So ah, it seems by the line of 200+ mother fuckers that I counted at midnight last week, that holidays are close. With only one day left of the semester officially, next week is guaranteed to be massive even if I don’t use lots of swear words and superlatives in this write up (don’t worry, I still will).

After last week’s success the back bar will be operating at R20 only again, playing strictly hip hop and random experimental instrumentals etc. Headlining we have the one and only DJ DRAFT. Dude plays a whole host of dope funk/hip hop, check it out here then get along to see him fuck shit up live- http://soundcloud.com/user8976378/cut-a-rug

And headlining the Main room, we have something very special indeed. Some dope dude’s causing quite a fucking commotion on several radio stations, with seriously infectious alternative infused hip hop, often laced with such heavy beats it leaves them feeling like a mix between Drake, Diplo and Does It Offend You, Yeah. Yes it’s JUPITER PROJECT. Check out their debut track here http://soundcloud.com/jupiterproject/alive-jupiter-project

Last but not least, we’ve also got back George FM/TVNZ U’s most humorous, yet musically plugged in, Monday night duo- Monty & The Face.

So throw in a couple of new faces and we’ve got a ridiculous massive line up that consists of:

▲Jupiter Project (LIVE)
▲DJ Draft
▲Monty & The Face (George FM/TVNZ U)
▲Farley
▲Lost Boys
▲Mad World
▲Jake & Josh
▲Michael Ross (he knows he's playing now)

So naturally it’s going to be a party of epic proportions, so again I warn you get in early. It also means you’ll get the jump on drink specials and get to see all of the colossal line up.

Mobile Blogging Comes To 1 Snap Music!

Hi all,

Early this morning, you know us vampires only sleep during the day, I downloaded a Blog Editor for my smartphone. And, this entry was created using it only.

So far, I'm very impressed with its features, functionality and ease of use. While it wont replace the more comprehensive editor running on the 1 Snap Lab! computers, it's nice to have such a useful, and mobile, tool in my creative kit.

Kind regards,
Bill

P. S. Sorry for the lack of updates. I've had some rather serious personal matters to attend to. I'll be back on track shortly though.

Gil Scott-Heron, Poet And Musician, Has Died

Gil Scott-Heron died Friday afternoon in New York, his book publisher reported. He was 62. The influential poet and musician is often credited with being one of the progenitors of hip-hop, and is best known for the spoken-word piece "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised."

Gil Scott-Heron Makes A Striking Return

Scott-Heron was born in Chicago in 1949. He spent his early years in Jackson, Tenn., attended high school in The Bronx, and spent time at Pennsylvania's Lincoln University before settling in Manhattan. His recording career began in 1970 with the album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, which featured the first version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." The track has since been referenced and parodied extensively in pop culture.

Scott-Heron continued to record through the 1970s and early '80s, before taking a lengthy hiatus. He briefly returned to the studio for 1994's Spirits. That album featured the track "Message to the Messengers," in which Scott-Heron cautions the hip-hop generation that arose in his absence to use its newfound power responsibly. He has been cited as a key influence by many in the hip-hop community — such as rapper-producer Kanye West, who closed his platinum-selling 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy with a track built around a sample of Scott-Heron's voice.

Scott-Heron struggled publicly with substance abuse in the 2000s, and spent the early part of the decade in and out of jail on drug possession charges. He began performing again after his release in 2007, and in 2010 released a new album, I'm New Here, to widespread critical acclaim.

THE ARC will then play until close, making everything go rainbow colours and your voice hoarse from singing along.

Joined by the Titans of house, Chaos Dans Le CBD and their rowdy mates mr mozzie, Farley Daniel and Finders Sables in Ink, this is gonna be like one big house party with everyone playing different iPods in different 'zones'
