Goldie created his debut album, the immaculate ‘Timeless’ on his Metalheadz imprint, in 1995. 16 years later, the sentiment rings true: it sounds remarkably more progressive and idiosyncratic than ever. ‘Timeless’ as a concept defines who Goldie is, in every sense of the word. Decades from now, his music, art, charismatic gold smile (remnants of his teenage days as an alchemist, selling gold teeth in New York) and larger-than-life aura will still intrigue and confound even the most jaded of historians.

There are many faces to the complex creative, far beyond his musical accomplishments as an iconic and ever-evolving producer, being largely responsible for Drum & Bass’ most stirring, experimental and symphonic work. Or as an uncompromising DJ that’s lit up bassbins in just about every city across the globe, for well over two decades. Or as bold leader of the iconic Metalheadz label, harnessing an international roster of groundbreaking artists. The endless list of his non-music titles are equally wide-ranging as they are surprising: historical graffiti artist (covering his estate with over 60 murals by the age of 17); acclaimed fine artist; author; orchestral conductor; part-time Hollywood actor; gossip column mainstay; ‘Eastenders’ character; reality TV and documentary star; father; yoga enthusiast (“This past year, I’ve done 87 classes in the UK - 20 in America and about 25 in Asia - so I’m up in the hundreds, baby.”). Perhaps his atypical background exemplifies the strength and infinite possibility of a person’s creative spirit.

"This music - this wildstyle music - is not for the faint-hearted. I tried to get the alchemy right, which I've done on this mix: each of these are standalone tunes. It is dynamic, it does take you from one extreme to the other, because for me that's what my life is like. It'll be bikram yoga one morning, then DJing long into the night. Everything is balanced, not too much of one thing. When I think of the D&B tunes on this mix, I think of them as spiritual euphoria, like I've been lifted out of something."
Goldie

As Metalheadz strongly rides into its 18th year, the label and its leader keep the focus on progression and future-geared ideals, without ever succumbing to the incessant whirrs of today’s hype machine. As the various offshoots of bass music morph around them, MDZ continue to explore and expand the confines of drum & bass with their global army. ‘FABRICLIVE 58: Goldie’ is an embodiment of the Metalheadz mantra: forever finding ways to challenge formulas and take the D&B sound into an intelligent, deeply spiritual - and downright primal - sphere. A loud and proud snapshot of his Metalheadz stable, and the likeminded artists that stay at their level on equally progressive D&B labels, the mix features some of the most cutting edge and visionary music on the genre’s helm. ‘FABRICLIVE 58’ stands as proof that their stance within the music world is, quite simply, unmovable - not today nor in the world of tomorrow. Time stands no chance.

Jay-Z vs Samiyam - PSA

Wednesday, August 31 at 9:00pm - September 1 at 2:00am

Zen Nightclub
17 Albert St
Auckland, New Zealand

CLOCKED promotions and FuZen are proud to present….

SAMIYAM (LA) (Brainfeeder/Hyperdub/Poo-Bah)

Yes only a month or so after the release of his sophomore album “Sam Baker’s Album", we’ve got him here direct from LA LIVE…

For the uninformed, Samiyam is an instrumental hip hop producer that has made huge waves worldwide with his unique sound. He has been pivotal in popularizing the particular soundscape also famously dominated by the likes of Clams Casino, Gas Lamp Killer, Nosaj Thing and Flying Lotus (who Sam also produces with, as FLYamSAM).

His last visit here saw him play live off MPC's/Samplers to a full capacity show at Cassette, wowing everyone in attendance. His energetic set consisted of old school hip hop, heavier dubby beats, glitchy synth heavy rhythms and funk/soul/RnB elements. He also brought with him a whole swag of unreleased collabs/remixes/mash ups featuring the likes of Fly Lo, DJ Premier, Big Noyd, Blu, Jay-Z, Alchemist, Radiohead, Exile, Lil Wayne, Shlohmo and more.

Local support from SCRATCH 22, BEN JAMIN (live), FINDERS KEEPER, JOHNNY SABLE, MOPPY & MAD WORLD.

This is one of your last chances to embrace the quality hip hop/atmosphere Zen provides since it’s closing- SO BE THERE. Also as it’s midweek, Samiyam will be on ~12:30, so there’s no excuse for 9-5er’s to miss this. For those wanting to make a night of it (as you should be!) there’s an after party at Third & Social with the amazing LOWQUID headlining.

Auckland, New Zealand

On Saturday February 19th, Hektic Promotions and Zen is proud to present DJ and producer 'DZ' all the way from North America, dropping the filthiest and grimiest dubstep for all you true dubheads!

Definitely among the most influential and widely recognized dubstep artists out there . DZ has made his name with an almost robot-like consistency of quality productions and releases on a variety of labels internationally, as well as higher profile remixes for the likes of Jokers of the Scene, The Crookers , Wu-tang Clan, Major Lazer and Gucci Mane.

NDA (Wellington)
With support: Steve Durez, Mitch Lowe, Disko Stu & Sam Raines

NDA is very difficult to pigeon hole, if you ask him what his style is he would probably tell you, "It's upfront big room house, remixed anthems, electro, some beepy stuff with a bunch of live acapellas, loops, mash ups, live remixes and the odd kitchen sink."
You could also say he plays "big room, main floor destroying, roof raising, upfront, WTF was that track? house music"

NDA's tough, banging sound , A.D.D. energy and unique style is what he’s all about. His rock hard reputation, fresh sets and crazy good times skills (using his mixer and CDJS like a drum kit) have seen him blow up in 09 and gain respect from his DJ peers and fans alike. NDA is one of the best technically skilled DJs in NZ by far and regularly mentors up and coming DJs only too happy to give his time, he’s like mother Theresa!

Quality music, quality drinks and an awesome bunch of people makes Zen the best place to be on a Wednesday.

This event is run in conjunction with WAX'D in Fu! No where else can you get such amazing acts and drink specials on a Wednesday!

Jakes is many things to many people, to some he is the voice of TC’s smash hits ‘Deep’, ‘Drink’ and ‘Mindkiller’, to others he is the Daddy of Bristolian Dubstep crew H.E.N.C.H and to musical historians he is one of the most interesting vocalists that underground British music can lay claim to. Never afraid to break from tradition and roll with his own flow, Jakes’ voice has become one of the most recognisable in the game and his energetic live performances see him travelling across the globe and smacking down raves from Bristol to Boston with his inimitable style.

Within a few years, Jakes has gone from being one of the big name MCs of the drum and bass world to now being one of the most talked about Producers in Dubstep. In a very short space of time, the progression towards his now trademark style has been applauded by many – and not limited to the Dubstep scene.

In 2009, the release of The Jakes Project, which included anthems such as 'Rock Tha Bells' and 'Warfac'e, demonstrated Jakes’ ability to straddle genres with his aptness for innovation and style remaining intact. With his own productions receiving widespread support from as wide-ranging DJs from Skream to Crookers to Mary Anne Hobbs to Gaslamp Killer, Jakes has gone on to produce remixes that have topped download charts and he regularly receives extensive radio coverage. With this in mind, it’s no wonder that his label has a host of talented artists releasing their productions through the HENCH imprint.

The fAR qUITS

FRIDAY 30th July 2010 @ ZEN BAR

A night where being a fAR qUIT is considered a good thing.

The most outrageous outfit/funniest costume wins $100 bar tab. Dressing up is not compulsory, in fact you can do what you like, the way you want to do it. We do ask however that you get out of control, just this once or twice.

A night of BREAKS, dubstep and DnB. Prepare for one hell of a performance. The fAR qUITS will be performing a live audio visual show, featuring instrumental support and the infamous MC Jimmy Reklaw! This interactive triplet, like their name suggests, are crazy.

But lets face it, an act, a venue..You've seen it all before. That ain't how the fAR qUITS do it. How about clowns, candy floss machines or perhaps a midget pouring drinks in your mouth, get a bit of that down ya. Done.

The Lineup

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

BIO:

Welcome to a new world. The world of fAR qUITS.

Take 3 iron's, a dishwasher and some baking soda, put it in a bowl and give it a good stir. What one would normally expect to gain from that concoction is an assortment of appliances and some powder, not the fAR qUITS.....

Proving that being a fAR qUIT is sometimes more prudent than actually using common sense. This trifecta is not a force to be reckoned with at all, in fact, they don't have the ability to force a reckoning upon anyone. Who has been faced with a sensible opportunity and instead said negative, no, nada? Well, that's precisely what the fAR qUIT's are about, changing lightbulbs.

Intentionally bringing the newest and the oldest in Breaks, however intentions being just that.....intentions. They may be inclined to branch out with a dabble of Dubstep, Drum n' Bass and the odd Electro banger, or any other interesting genres that they can get their hands on. Smidgen of industrial folk trance anyone?....Easy tiger that will do.

Please join us on an adventurous mission in unnatural surroundings. The result? Positive.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

1. So... why the name fAR qUITS?
Basically we want to represent what we are, and it's just that, fAR qUITS.

2. Who’s in the group and what are your backgrounds?
Ben Cooper is an amateur taxidermist and budding producer (formally from Mt Eden Dubstep). Mitch Lowe is an indecisive jewellery manufacturer and is also putting his finger in the production pie. Mike Chitham reigns from a different field with a knowledgeable history in baking and electronic music.

3. What style are you producing?
fAR qUITs are about breaks. Not just breaking things but producing the music too. Our promo CD titled "The Break Debate" features a unique mash-up of breaks, dubstep and the odd party banger.

4. What tracks are in the pipelines for you?
We are very excited about some upcoming releases including new originals and a few bootlegs. (Watch this space). If our music doesn't make you jump then you don't deserve legs.

5. What is your goal?
Quite simply, we are full of surprises. Our aim is to be more than just your typical DJ set. With the fAR qUITS, expect the unexpected, from gorilla and Santa suits to outrageous stage antics. Normal is not in our vocabulary.

6. How long has this been in the works for?
Well technically since birth. It was only a matter of time.

7. Are you signed to a record label?
We once signed a record label, but I guess with a crayon it doesn't count.

8. When and where is your gig taking place?
The infamous Fu/Zen is where it's at. 30th of July will be the date where happiness becomes even happier.

9. What is the fAR qUITS philosophy?
To make ridiculous an understatement.

10. Anything else you want to tell us that we don’t already know?
A wenus is the skin that dangles off the elbow.

Shots Of The Day - Cause 4 Concern (UK) @ Zen Set #2

CAUSE 4 CONCERN: http://www.myspace.com/cause4concerndnb

That every cause has an effect is common knowledge. For Optiv, Stuart, Toby and Mark, the cause is drum & bass, and their effect is both indelible and undeniable. Known collectively as Cause 4 Concern, the crew came together back at the start of 1999, when Optiv was affiliated with Aspect Records, and Stuart and Mark were working for Vinyl Distribution.
A testament to their talent, it took only a few short months of collaborative creation before they scored their first signing – and not just to any old label –
but the massive and seminal MOVING SHADOW. At the time they were known as nCode, but by July they had become Cause 4 Concern and started their own imprint label. The first 12” dropped that December, and secured the support of DJs Doc Scott, Fierce and Grooverider, amongst many others.
Releases on respected labels Tru Playaz, Renegade Hardware, Moving Shadow and Timeless Recordings were to follow.
Promoter’s right across the planet couldn’t help but pay attention, and consequently there aren’t many places C4C haven’t performed.

VICE (Dub Militia):
Holding it down on the 1s and 2s Vice has a biased towards darker beats but switches between styles constantly playing a full spectrum of DnB and dubstep laying down seamless sets of both. One of the DUB MILITIA Co-Founders Vice is a resident at all of our events playing support for DJ Kutz, Pinch, HavocNdeeD, Jason Howson also playing at a lot of local events 2010 is set to see Vice supporting more internationals, playing more events and sharing his tune selection with crowds New Zealand wide.

MYRRHMA (Dub Militia):
Originally hailing from Wellington Myrrhma plays big tunes mixing them effortlessly smashing dance floors at any event that is fortunate enough to host him. Representing Dub Militia on the wheels of steel myrrhma is doing big things in 2010, catch him at a club near you!

ECHO COMPANY:
Echo Company are a 3 man crew currently calling Auckland home. They have all been djing separately for over 3 years and have supported many international and local acts such as Datsik, Shock One, The Upbeats, Noah D, Foreign Beggars and Trolley Snatcha to name a few. Their music is energetic, mind-blowing and undeniably rising in the Dubstep music scene. They all bring different assets to the group which gives a unique twist to their beats.

EVADE:
Eva Vemich aka Evade is gearing up for a big future in the worldwide drum and bass scene. Her undeniable passion for vinyl runs deep and she is constantly on the move, recruiting fellow vinyl heads and crowds to the wonderful world and sound of wax. Her zest and energy are infectious for all those who bare witness to her bass heavy, rolling tech sets.

In just 2 years Eva has become a regular DJ at Fu bar, featuring in gigs such as Fu 10th Birthday, Fuse, Rise and Wednesday vinyl only Wax’d. She has supported some of NZ’s very best such as Trei, Dose, and Agent Alvin, as well as supporting Teknik and Bulletproof on behalf of the Cyanide recordings 9th birthday bash.

Eva can regularly be heard at various underground events and radio shows such as Boosh Fm and UpFm.

Eva’s talent, love and intricate understanding for drum and bass has prompted a solid future for her, she is also on the move towards production so keep a close eye.

INTERCEPT:
Intercept is a new comer to the club scene but by no means new to DnB. He made his club debut @ Dub Militias club event ORIENTATION DUBSTEP impressing the organisers with his good track selection and decent mixing skills. Constantly improving Intercept will be a feature at a lot events in 2010 so keep your eyes open Auckland!

DOSAGE:
A relatively new comer to the scene Dosage AKA Ben Davies has come runner up in the Menu Mag DJ competition, played support for Antiform and has been fortunate enough to have a set at Dub Militias event for local up and coming producers/DJs tearing up 4:20 Bar with a set full of hard hitting tunes accompanied by his unique style of mixing. Also a name to look out for in 2010
Dosage will show Auckland what he can do and how he intends to do it.

DJ Kutz is set to show New Zealand how the Croydon mob do it, bass heavy and ruthless!!

A bit about Kutz for those of you that don't know!!:

Over what seemed like an eternity DJ Kutz, has risen to prominence following a string of successful releases on seminal labels such as Soul Jazz, Wheel & Deal and Sub Freq. His rise is similar to that of his peers; growing up in sunny Croydon, first getting decks at 13 playing a blend of the darker side of jungle and garage, which eventually forged the way for the early days of dubstep.

Regular visits to Hatcha at the legendary Big Apple Records meant that he was always stocked up with all the latest white labels and test pressings, which provided the original impetus for Kutz to try his own hand at production. After several years and 3 hard-drive failures,Kutz’ music had began to take shape and was gaining DJ support from other artists like Skream, Benga, Chef and Hatcha.

Alongside Kutz’ undeniable talent for production, he has also built a reputation for providing energetic and flawless DJ sets, having played major venues and festivals the world over. With tours of USA, Australia and New Zealand all set for 2010, Kutz is set to take his unique brand of bass music to the furthest corners of the globe.

In the studio, Kutz is putting the finishing touches to his debut album, set for release on Soul Jazz in summer 2010, as well otherreleases including his debut on Skream’s, Disfigured Dubz and his much publicised collaborations with Benga set for release on Digital Soundboy.

Dub Militia Resident D.J Vice will be attendance and the system at Fu will be tuned to perfection if he has anything to say about it!

Limited $15.00 Earlybirds available at Beat Merchants, Real Groovy and online at I-Ticket available from the 20th of march...
More on the door!!

Shots of the Day – Dig Deep 4 Haiti @ Zen

Hi all,

Here are the remainder of the photos from Dig Deep 4 Haiti @ Zen that I promised you.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the event raised a bit over $2,000 for Unicef NZ’s relief efforts in Haiti. However, If you feel to need to donate more, please click on the hyperlink above, and do as you see fit.

While I didn’t stay as long as I would have liked to, I was too tired from Saturday night/Sunday morning really, I did stay long enough to appreciate what was going on, and to have a few chats with some very interesting and nice people.

Auckland seems to be turning into a rather cosmopolitan city and this is being reflected in the makeup of it’s population. I’ve encountered people from all over the world here recently and quite enjoy the vibe they bring to the place.

As far as the music went, most of it was of the Hip-Hop, Reggae and Drum N’ Bass variety, and all of the performances were really quite good.

Kind regards
